Car washes

Loyalty program for car washes

Car washing is the purest version of the loyalty problem. The product is undifferentiated, the competitor is a forecourt away, and price is the only thing most drivers are choosing on. A card that makes the tenth wash free is one of the few things that makes the choice about you rather than about the sign.

Fraud actually matters here

A punch card at a car wash gets copied more than almost anywhere. Digital stamps are attributed and cannot be forged.

Fast enough for a queue

One scan, one tap. It does not slow the line, which is the only thing that gets a card abandoned.

Works across sites

Wash at one site, redeem at another. The balance follows the driver and settlement between sites is reported.

No app to install in a car

Nobody is downloading anything in a queue. A QR code on the payment window and it is in their wallet.

Why paper fails badly in this trade

A wash card is a small piece of card that lives in a glovebox, gets rained on, and is punched with a hole punch anyone can buy. Of every trade that runs punch cards, this is the one where operators most often admit they have no idea how many free washes they are giving away. Digital does not make staff stricter, but every stamp is attributed to a person and a time, which makes a pattern visible in a way a box of punched card never is.

The reward has near-zero marginal cost

A free wash costs you water, chemical and a few minutes of a machine that is running anyway. Compared with a café giving away a coffee that has real food cost, or a salon giving away an hour of a chair, a car wash reward is close to free. That means you can afford to be more generous than most trades and should probably shorten the card rather than lengthen it.

Turning the one-off into the regular

Most drivers wash their car when it looks bad, which means a schedule of nobody's choosing. The value of the card is in changing the default from "wherever I happen to be" to "the place where I am four stamps in". You will see that in the data as a rising share of stamps coming from returning customers rather than first visits, which is the number worth watching in this trade.

Multiple sites and franchise settlement

If you run several washes or a franchise network, one card across all of them is what customers expect. The awkward part is money: the site that gave the tenth wash away is not the site that earned the first nine. Every stamp records where it was issued and every redemption where it was handed over, and the settlement report is the difference — so the sites can square up on real numbers.

Common questions

How many washes should the card be?
Six to eight works better than ten for most operators. The marginal cost of a wash is low, so a shorter card buys more behaviour change per pound given away than a longer one that drivers never finish.
Can drivers use the card at any of my sites?
Yes. The balance is shared across every location, and the settlement report shows which site earned each stamp and which handed over the reward.
Does it work if the customer has no signal on the forecourt?
The customer does not need signal — their pass is already on their phone. Your staff scanner does need a connection, and it tells you plainly if a stamp did not go through rather than pretending it did.
