Ice cream shops

Loyalty program for ice cream shops

Ice cream has a problem no café has: half the year. A loyalty card in a seasonal trade is not really about the tenth scoop — it is about still existing in a customer's phone in March, when they have not thought about you since September.

Survives the off-season

The card stays in Apple Wallet all winter with the balance intact. Paper does not survive a coat pocket in November.

Families, not individuals

One visit is often four cones. Stamping per item rather than per visit reflects what was actually bought.

Fast in a summer queue

A July queue is the worst possible time for a slow system. One scan, one tap, no account.

See the season honestly

How much of August was new faces versus returning ones is the question that decides next summer.

The winter is the whole point

A seasonal business spends the summer acquiring customers and the winter losing them, and starts again from close to zero each year. A digital card breaks that cycle in a small but real way: it is still on the phone in spring, still showing seven of ten, and it is a reason to come back to you rather than to whoever opens nearest the park. That is worth more than the reward itself.

Stamp per scoop, not per visit

A family buying four cones is four sales, and stamping once because it was one transaction feels mean to the person paying. Scanning once and adding four stamps takes the same few seconds and matches what was actually bought. It also means your stamp counts reflect volume rather than footfall, which makes the numbers useful.

What to reward in a low-ticket trade

A scoop costs you very little, so a free one after ten is affordable and reads as generous. The mistake is rewarding something with real cost — a large tub, a branded item — on a card short enough that people finish it in a fortnight of hot weather. Work out how fast a keen customer completes the card in August, not in April.

Weather, queues and the practical constraint

Your busiest hour of the year is also the one where every extra second at the till is visible in the length of the queue. This is why enrolment has to be a QR code and nothing else: no app, no email, no form. A customer scans, taps once, and has a card. If signing up takes longer than serving, it will not be offered on the days that matter.

Common questions

Do balances expire over the winter?
Not unless you set an expiry. For a seasonal trade, leaving balances alone is usually right — the half-finished card is exactly what brings someone back in the spring.
Can I add several stamps at once for a family?
Yes. Staff scan once and set the quantity, so four cones is four stamps in a single scan rather than four separate scans.
Is it worth paying for this out of season?
That is a fair question for a business that closes for months. You can cancel and return, though you keep more value by staying — the card in a customer's wallet is doing its work in the off-season, which is precisely when nothing else is.
